Imagination is a kind of engineering. Build what no one has seen yet.
Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace (1815–1852), was a mathematician in an age that barely let women study mathematics at all. The daughter of the poet Lord Byron, she was raised on numbers instead of verse, and at seventeen she met Charles Babbage and saw his calculating machines. In 1843 she translated an Italian engineer’s paper on Babbage’s proposed Analytical Engine and added her own notes, which ran to nearly three times the length of the original. In them she set out, step by step, how the machine could compute Bernoulli numbers, a sequence often called the first published computer program, and she saw further than anyone around her: that a machine working on symbols could one day handle music, pictures, anything that can be expressed in rules.
The line on this shirt is her own, from Note A of those notes, signed A.A.L. and published in Scientific Memoirs, volume 3 (London, 1843): “The Analytical Engine weaves algebraical patterns just as the Jacquard-loom weaves flowers and leaves.” She called her way of thinking “poetical science.” Logic and imagination aren’t opposites. Put them together and you can build the future.
Ada rises chest-up before a towering brass Analytical Engine, gears and columns like a halo behind her, punched cards fanning out on either side, while streams of violet-blue light flow around her like woven thread—brass, lace, and electric starlight.
