Cleopatra VII Philopator (69–30 BC) was the last active ruler of Ptolemaic Egypt. She took the throne at about eighteen and held it for more than twenty years, through civil war, exile, and the shifting politics of Rome. Ancient writers say she spoke many languages and could talk with most foreign envoys without an interpreter, and that she was the first of her Greek-speaking dynasty to learn Egyptian. She bargained with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony as an equal, and ran a wealthy kingdom from Alexandria, one of the great cities of the ancient world.

The line on this shirt comes down to us from the Roman historian Livy. That part of his history is lost, but a later commentary on Horace by the grammarian Porphyrio preserves it: after Alexandria fell in 30 BC, Octavian held her captive and treated her with deliberate kindness while he planned his triumph in Rome, and she is reported to have said again and again, “I will not be led in triumph.” They are her words as Livy reported them, not something she wrote herself. Pressure doesn’t get to decide who you are. You do.
