Confucius (551–479 BC) was born in the state of Lu, in present-day Shandong, China. Teacher, adviser, and scholar, he spent his life on one question: what makes a person, and a society, truly strong? His answer was character: self-discipline, respect, and doing what is right when it’s hard. Recorded by his followers in the Analects, his teachings shaped how leaders across East Asia carried themselves for over two thousand years.

In Chinese art, the dragon stands for power and strength. Confucius pictured strength differently: “The superior man has a dignified ease without pride.” Calm on the outside, unshakable underneath.

“The superior man is modest in his speech, but exceeds in his actions.” comes from Book 14 of the Analects, in James Legge’s classic translation. Mastery is restraint. Keep your strength in reserve, don’t waste it on noise, and use it when it counts.
