Confucius (551–479 BC) was born in the small state of Lu, in present-day Shandong, China. He grew up in modest circumstances, worked his way through minor government posts, and spent years traveling between rival courts before coming home to teach. He never ruled a kingdom, yet his ideas shaped East Asia for more than two thousand years.

After his death, his home in Qufu became a shrine. Dynasty after dynasty expanded it into the Temple of Confucius, today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Legacies are built the way he described his own life: “At fifteen, I had my mind bent on learning. At thirty, I stood firm.” Decades of steady work, done mostly when nobody was watching.

“The superior man is modest in his speech, but exceeds in his actions.” comes from Book 14 of the Analects, in James Legge’s classic translation. Say less, deliver more. Stack the work day after day, and one day it will speak for you.
