Joan of Arc (c. 1412–1431) was a peasant girl from Domrémy, in eastern France, who at about thirteen began to hear voices she believed came from God, telling her to drive the English out and see the Dauphin crowned. In a world where a farm girl had no say at all, she talked her way into the royal court at Chinon, put on armour and rode to Orléans, a city that had been under siege for months. She arrived at the end of April 1429, and within nine days the siege was broken. That July, Charles VII was crowned at Reims with Joan beside him, holding her banner.

A year later she was captured at Compiègne, handed over to the English and put on trial at Rouen before a court set on condemning her. At nineteen, with no lawyer, she faced rooms full of learned clerics who laid a trap in nearly every question. On 24 February 1431 they asked whether she knew she was in the grace of God: say yes and she was guilty of presumption, say no and she had confessed. Her answer, written into the trial record, is the line on this shirt: “If I am not, may God place me there; if I am, may God so keep me.” She was burned at the stake in Rouen on 30 May 1431. A retrial cleared her name in 1456, and she was canonized in 1920.

You won’t always have the title, the credentials or the room on your side. Joan had none of them. What she had was conviction, and the humility to carry it without arrogance. Hold your ground with a clear head and a steady heart.
