Ragnar Lothbrok, a Danish king and Viking warrior of the 9th century, is one of the great names of the Viking Age. The sagas tell of his raids across the North Sea, of the shieldmaiden Lagertha and the wise Kráka who became his wives, and of sons like Ivar the Boneless and Björn Ironside, who carried his name across Europe.

In Norse myth, Odin kept two wolves, Geri and Freki, at his side. The wolf stood for loyalty to the pack and courage in the hunt, the same traits the sagas give Ragnar. Captured at last by King Ælla of Northumbria and thrown into a pit of snakes, he met death with a song. The medieval poem Krákumál ends it with the words on this shirt: “Laughing shall I die.”
